Litter Prevention in Maui County
There are many ways the community can help prevent litter and thus protect our environment, public health, economy, and way of life from litter’s negative impacts.
Community Cleanups are the most basic, hands-on way for one, two, twenty, or one hundred people to make a difference by removing rubbish from our public spaces. We invite anyone in Maui County–resident or visitor–to organize their own cleanup in an area of Maui they love. Want to plan a cleanup? We can help!
Our year-round Education programs provide the awareness and resources through which individuals young and old can value and regularly participate in sustainable waste management practices in their daily lives.
MMN’s Quick Response program tackles large-scale litter and illegal dumpsites that endanger the health of our environment and cause blight (neglected, abandoned, or rundown conditions).
The annual Litter Index and Community Appearance surveys as outlined by our national affiliate, Keep America Beautiful is another way by which staff and volunteers can visually estimate the presence of litter within our communities, identify littering hot spots, and help determine whether littering behaviors are changing over time. Sound like a cool Citizen Science opportunity to you? That’s because it is! Let us know if you want to get involved.
