Community Steward Spotlight: Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset
We wish to celebrate the strong partnership we enjoy with the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset. ‘Go Green Recycle Every Third Saturday’ events in West Maui have been a great success due to the continued insight and dedication of the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset.
In 2015, Club members recognized a need in their community for more robust recycling options. Inspired by their mission to engage in meaningful, achievable projects that enhance the quality of life in West Maui and beyond, Club members saw a monthly recycling event as a timely and valuable community service. Additionally, “Go Green Recycle Every Third Saturday” perfectly aligns with Lahaina Sunset’s commitment to focus special attention on environment-related projects.
“The ‘Go Green’ focus has been chosen because of its importance to this island community, and because it reflects the traditions and values of this community’s native Hawaiian heritage,” states the Club’s mission page. “The land (‘āina) is sacred and must be respected. Our club seeks to uphold this Hawaiian tradition in our actions and our advocacy.”

Every third Saturday since July 2015, Rotary Club members have been volunteering their time to help their fellow West Maui residents practice responsible methods of disposal for the household items they no longer want. Rotary Club members have generously donated their time, talents, and treasure to making ‘Go Green Recycle Every Third Saturday’ a reality, in tandem with the collaboration and support from the County of Maui, 5A Rent-A-Space, and the Lahaina Cannery Mall.
Programs like ‘Go Green Recycle’ are most successful when the communities they serve likewise play a role in their implementation through participation and support. The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s multi-faceted commitment to “Go Green Recycle Every Third Saturday” is a prime example of community stewardship at its finest!
